Nicole and Bruce Armstrong
We are the Armstrongs and we live just outside of Buckhorn, Ontario.
In order to save energy we have done many small things such as use fluorescent and LED lighting, dry clothes on a clothesline, and use power bars to eliminate phantom loads. We have also taken a much larger step in reducing our energy footprint by building our house completely off of the grid. We do use a small amount of gasoline for a backup generator, but otherwise our electrical energy comes from the sun.
The motivation for changing the way we acquired our energy was the Ottawa ice storm. It made us realize how important it is to have a secure, reliable source of energy, and to take responsibility for our use of it. Of course, an added benefit is that it is better for the environment. And the 2.4 kW, pole-mounted solar array is interesting to look at: on moonlit nights it looks like a movie screen from the drive-in.
In order, to accomplish our goal of going off-grid, we had Flanagan and Sun help design and install the system. We love our self-sufficient home and have great appreciation to Sean for giving us an outstanding price and excellent, friendly service and advice.
